The use of emoji is a complex art. In fact, according to some, if you do not put enough smilies in your messages you are cold and without any understanding of the fun. If you use too many, on the other hand, you can come across as frivolous and carefree.

But new research has found that a passion for emoji-and their abundant use-has a surprising benefit that (probably) no one had ever thought of.

**Do you have enough sex? Here’s the formula to find out**

Apparently, in fact, people who pepper their messages with emoticons have better sex lives.

Here’s what your use of emoji says about you

The research was published in the journal PLoS ONE, and was conducted by members of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University and the Department of Psychology at Lake Forest College in Chicago.

The two universities surveyed more than 5,000 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 94.

The results were clear: people who used more emoji in online communication went on more dates on average, and had more sex than those who did not use smileys.

The study authors showed that frequent use of emoji with potential partners was linked not only to increased physical activity under the sheets, but also to a more active and successful dating life.

Research participants had to fill out a survey asking if they used emoticons and, if so, why. They were then also asked several questions about their love life and sexual activity.

It was found that 38% never use them, 29% almost never, 28% use emoticons regularly, 3% use at least one in each message, and 2.5% use more than one in the same conversation.

The researchers then examined the survey data, which included not only the frequency in using emoji, but also the intimacy with the recipient of the smilies and possibly the level of intimacy achieved.

What do emoji have to do with success in love?

Use of emoji with potential partners is associated with relationship maintenance beyond the first date and with more romantic and sexual interactions, explained the study authors.

**How many calories are burned by having sex?**

However, the mystery remains as to why this is actually the case.

The authors have several explanations as to why high emoji use might be linked to a flourishing love life.

Indeed, according to them, those who use a lot of smilies might be better at forming intimate and emotional connections with others: nonverbal expressions communicated through emoticons are useful both for getting to know each other better and for amplifying a positive message.

Finally, emoji also help toUnderstand the interest people show in each other.
